A heavy air-to-air payload for this Mirage 2000-5 : three tanks and a full load of MICA missiles for air superiority.

Above Djibouti, 2011.

That must be one hell of an engine to push the Mirage with that payload. Do you experience a noticeable difference in performance with the three external tanks?
Reply
:iconcigognes:
Yes indeed. The under-wing external tanks are subsonic and the roll rate is a bit slower.

Please forgive the ignorance of this next question, but I have to ask; how do you compare the Mirage 2000-5 in ACM to the F-16? Looking at them externally, they are similar air frames with delta wings, one powerful engine and roughly the same size. I know it comes down to who's doing the flying, but I must know if you find the Viper to be a challenge to fight.
Thanks!

First of all, the F-16 is not delta winged, but she have nearly the same performances as the 2000. As you write, the pilot makes the difference. Nevertheless, the F-16 is always a challenge to fight because of her turn-rate, roll-rate and power to weight ratio. In a turning dogfight, within visual range, you have to be careful 'cause the 16 is a heavy player, good with a knife :)

Interesting... thanks for the correction; I was always informed that the '16 was considered to be in the delta winged family. Oops! :)

Beautiful plane! I've always loved the Mirage shape, even back with the Mirage III!
